Choosing a Suit Colour

Choosing a Suit Colour
May 7, 2017 Edit Suits Co.

There are many reasons for choosing a suit, whether it’s for your first job interview, graduation, christening, wedding or a date. Whatever the occasion, getting the right suit is a milestone and the colour should reflect what you wear it for. The ideal choice for a first multi-purpose suit should be a practical and classic charcoal grey.

Blue is also the other preferred option- navy for the traditionalists, cornflower for someone more fashion forward or perhaps a sharp and classy midnight blue.

Linen Suit 2

For a summer suit, you should look at pale colours in a light material– something in linen, cotton or a cotton blend is ideal. The sunnier the day, means the brighter the palette you can get away with, and in anticipation of a beautiful British summer, we would recommend our light yellow, blue, tan, grass green or white striped options.

It therefore makes sense to approach winter with the same mindset. More than likely the days are going to be dark, grey and a little bit miserable, so a dark suit is your best bet to blend in. However you might not want to conform to the norm, and can show a bit of personality with a pinstripe or dogtooth check, but be prepared to choose a heavier material – wool or wool blend is de rigueur for a winter suit.

Bear in mind you might be wearing it day to day, so a hard-wearing material will be best suited to puddles, raindrops and a heavy duty wool with be a classic investment piece and will add a bit of warmth.

Whichever the season, or occasion, a crisp white shirt (whether you opt for a linen shirt, silk shirt, or cotton) is your safest option for instant smart- appeal. It is a universally good choice- take note from primetime TV host Dermot O’Leary, who rocks a three-piece with aplomb! The colour of his suit tickles the scale of grey, but it is always matched with a pristine white collar.

This is versatile enough to wear on infinite occasions and goes with any suit choice (waistcoat optional). We also offer fabric options, so you can be confident that whatever material you choose, it will match your tailored suit. With a range including herringbone, twill and broad cloth, our dedicated shirts team can advise what is best for what occasion.

So with your shirt and suit sorted, you can and add some personality to your look with a tie. Bright ties are a nod to the rebel in you- everything else can be sleek and sophisticated, but a pop of colour at the neckline says a lot!

The more demure colour palette of your tie will suit the sartorial traditionalists, and grey, striped, black or navy tend to work best when matched with the palette of your suit. If you are super keen to impress, grab some matching socks too!

Simple things make a good impression.
